If you have never been to the Glen Rock, PA Fairie Festival, you have missed a real treat! Fairies of all ages flock to Spoutwood Farm to celebrate May Day, spring, and all things beautiful and natural. Artists display their carvings, leather masks, and handmade woolen goods. The market offers everything from herbs to bikinis made of chains!

Our good neighbors, Mark and Chrissy Hudgins, welcomed us with a hug as we entered the grounds. They and their girls Sidney and Katie are instrumental each year in helping to set up the festival and then to participate in the parade and other events.

When we first arrived, we felt as if we had been transported back to the 1960′s. It’s impossible to describe the mood at this event and the photos don’t quite capture the charm and sparkle of the festival. But suffice to say that the live music and spontaneous dancing, the hippie-type attire, and the general laid-back atmosphere took us back to the days of our youth.

Once the band, Telesma, started at 1 PM the action really picked up. Belly dancers appeared in front of the stage and all the folks who had been previously wandering around the grounds migrated towards the music. Young and old alike stood where they were and danced.

Above all, the Fairie Festival is all about activities. There are fairy tea parties, wand-making classes, drum dancing, a maypole dance, an earth healing ceremony, and a parade. If you like, you can visit Frodo’s house or the observatory. For animal lovers, the pot bellied pigs, dachshunds, greyhounds, alpacas, and many other species have tents dedicated to their causes.

As you wander about the grounds you’ll encounter snake handlers, scorpion handlers, magicians, blacksmiths, and story-tellers.

When you’ve eaten your fill of vegetarian and non-vegetarian food at the Sunshine Food Court, you can make your way to gathering of the royal court and oath ceremony of the tribal leaders. The parade of the green men follows. You’ll recognize the green men by the bushes and shrubs covering their bodies!
Here are some additional photos of our day at Spoutwood Farm.

Good-bye until next spring!
