Hemp Happiness
Okay, Not That Kind of Happiness!

Cannabis sativa is the scientific name for the hemp plant. You also know it as marijuana. But in this case, I am actually referring to industrial-quality hemp which is the world’s oldest known fiber. Hemp Traders sells balls of this hemp in many different lengths and blends. I ordered a box of 10 rolls of white hemp twine for summer projects. I have an idea for a pretty bag and after looking at some of the other hemp projects on the web, I think I can actually come up with garment too. So now it’s just a matter of waiting until my hemp arrives.
Father’s Day

This is a photo of my father and me in 1952. At that time, I was the only girl in the family but my mom went on to have two more daughters. My father, who is now 85 years old, was always interested in a million things. He exposed his daughters to art, music, the outdoors, and the search for spiritual truth. The most enduring memories I have, however, are of our many camping trips when we were a struggling young family. Thank you Vati for a life rich in love and the opportunity to experience so much.
Raising Frazier
My 3-year-old schnoodle, Frazier, is now in obedience class. When we got him from Animal Rescue Inc. he was one year old. At that time he could not walk on a leash, he jumped up on everyone and overwhelmed them with kisses, and he became psychotic if he saw another dog walk by. I was determined to get him to calm down and to ease his anxiety during walks.

Enter Elaine and Positive Pup Dog Training in Glen Rock, PA. Elaine made me realize that Frazier was not a leader but wanted to be a follower. When I didn’t provide structure for him, he became anxious. Now, after only a few lessons and with the help of the Gentle Leader, Frazier has settled down and is learning to ignore distractions and do what I tell him to do. We still have three lessons to go but have been practicing daily in different venues. By the end of the summer, Frazier should be a much calmer and happier dog.
Crochet?
It’s so hard to work on crochet in the summer months! In the next few weeks I will be having company and will not be clear until the middle of July. By that time I hope that my hemp will have arrived. Perhaps a few small light-weight items will be just the ticket for those hot days of July and August!

Thanks for the hemp company website! I’m interested in working with hemp, too, to make some small boxes and baskets. How did you decide what size to order? Are the measurements equivalent to yarn weights? I look forward to seeing what you make with it.

El, I intend to make some boxes and baskets too. There was a pattern on Ravelry for some very fancy and beautiful sandels (from Interweave Crochet Magazine) that were made of hemp. I had a particular design for a bag in mind and chose the same weight that the designer of the sandels had used. I think that the weights must be similar to yarn weights. The one I bought is twine and it appears to be about a size 5 thread weight.
