Up-Tempo Vest
Just because I am on vacation doesn’t mean that I am not working!

You can see from the photos that I brought a huge yarn bag with me to Florida. I had pictured myself sitting by the pool knitting or crocheting the day away. But somehow, the warm humid weather here is not very conducive to yarn work outside. Add the fact that we are spending some quality time with my parents and the crochet has really been on the back burner.
But today I finished my Tempo Yarn project and I decided to call it the Up-Tempo Vest.

Please Note: I have edited this PDF pattern to change the amount of yarn needed. Please download the new version.
This vest is crocheted very loosely with an L hook so it drapes beautifully. The ribbing looks a bit droopy in the photo but is actually fine. Tempo is labeled as a size 4 yarn, however, it works up more like a DK weight yarn. I believe it received the size 4 label because of the nubs and slubs that make this cotton/acrylic yarn so attractive. You can see that it shades subtlely from darker to lighter.
You can’t ask for an easier project! I simply made two long strips in half-double crochet and folded them in half, seamed them together at the back and sides and voila! A vest! The ribbing is optional. Once I had finished my strips I wanted a bit more length but you can start out with longer strips as an alternative.
Since this fabric is so loose it stretches quite a bit lengthwise and crosswise. The finished measurements are 42″ Bust and 26″ Length. The vest is meant to be worn open so the front panels will not meet across the bust.

Thank you Mary! This yarn can be a bit pricey but since you are making the strips to your measurements you can use any yarn and any stitch.

I love this pattern but I have a 44 inch bust measurement. Would this pattern still fit me?
What do you mean by you can make the strips to your own measurements and use any yarn and stitch? Thanks so much

Hi Cheryl, This pattern was made to fit me and I am the same size as you! To personalize for your size you make 2 rectangles. Each one should be 1/4 your bust measurement and 2 times the length you want the vest to be. Join the pieces as stated in the pattern and you have a vest! When you join the strips, do not join them half-way up. You must leave an additional 5 or 6 inches open for the neckline.

Hi, can I make our lovely vest using needles instead of crochet?
Great and easy patterns will try to attempt. Thanks

Of course Gigi! Just choose large needles and a thin yarn. Make 2 rectangles. Each one should be 1/4 your bust measurement and 2 times the length you want the vest to be. Join the pieces as stated in the pattern and you have a vest!

That is neat. I really appreciate it and I have started it. Thanking you for taking the time to reply to my query. I love knitting rather than crochet. But your the simplicity of your pattern made me feel like trying on needles.

Under the “Materials” section in your “Palm Beach Shrug” pattern, you list crochet hook sizes as K and M; however, in rows #1 and #2, you wrote that crochet hook sizes L and M are needed. After the Materials section, you never again mentioned the K hook. Love the pattern, but what sized hooks are actually needed for it?

Hi Audry, Thank you so much for helping me to keep my patterns correct! The hook for the Palm beach shrug should be K. I will go to the pattern now and correct it. Thank you!

Hello, I’m quite thrilled with your pattern, I’m going to make either this or the palm beach shrug for my mom. It is a shame that the only way to view your pattern is by downloading a toolbar, that will discourage me from viewing more of your beautiful work. Perhaps there is another way to post so that one does not have to download a toolbar that is likely full of spyware.

Hi Shannon, I am concerned that you are getting an add-on with my patterns. I had a few other people download them and they did not have the same problem. I know that WordPress will place an ad on my posts because I get a free blog but I have never had anything malicious. I understand that if you subscribe to the blog the ads will not occur. Is it possible that you may have picked up something on your computer that is causing this? I’m assuming that you are not just getting a message from Adobe to download their program so that you can see the pdf. I’d be interested to know exactly what type of toolbar is being offered. My husband is checking into this further but at this point I have not had anyone else with this issue. Please get back to me on this.

Aloha Michele! I was in Waikiki for 6 months in 1966 while my father, an electronics engineer, worked with the Navy at Pearl Harbor. We lived across from the Ala Wai Canal. It’s on my bucket list to return one day and to explore the old haunts. I’m sure that things have changed a lot since then!

Hi Sandra! The Autumn Rose Cardigan has been discontinued. It was reworked and is now the Come Again Cardigan. This is a PDF file so you can just hover your curser over the bottom of the pattern page and it should give you a print option.

I am a size 6-8 size person.
Would I need to alter the chain # of stitches when I begin??
Thanks!

Hi Abbie! The pattern says that the vest is 26 ” long, although mine grew in length over time. You must decide how long you want your vest to be from shoulder to hem. Don’t forget that you are throwing this strip of fabric over your shoulder to hang down in the back and front so once you make your chain, see if it reaches the right length for you minus the ribbing. You can make your chain any length you want but the key is to be aware that you are doing the back and the front at the same time.
